Dear Lizandra,
I am a consultant for a financial and technology consulting firm which services premiere clients in those industries. A couple of weeks ago, one of my female counterparts and I entertained two of our clients, where my colleague did something that was not embarrassing to me but in total poor taste. It was right after our dinner plates had been cleared and right before coffee and dessert, which she decided to skip. She then unexpectedly and unapologetically opened up her purse, whipped out a lip gloss and started to expertly reapply without so much as a mirror. The clients (one female and one male) seemed unfazed and continued to carry on with the conversation. I, on the other hand, was completely mortified by her behavior as well as her choice of lip gloss for a business occasion. What are your thoughts on this? Am I being overly sensitive? Shall I say something to her? What are your thoughts about choosing lip gloss for work-related events?

Dear Laura,
I must confess that I often hide in a corner seat on Metro North and “privately” apply a full face of make-up while in public transit—partly because it relaxes me and partly because my kids take much of my morning in getting ready. And yes, when you know your face as well as I do (and your colleague), you don’t even need a mirror. That said, to voluntarily or involuntarily apply any type of cosmetic, particularly lipstick or lip gloss while dining, whether personal or professional, is absolutely in poor taste or etiquette. So I’ll confirm that you are not being overly sensitive. However, please understand that while her actions may embarrass you, they ultimately don’t reflect who you are. It is not easy or in most cases advisable to offer unsolicited advice to a grown person, especially one that is your peer. Oftentimes, it can damage a relationship irreversibly. You may attempt to use humor in bringing it up, but ultimately you know the personality better than I do. As a general rule, I would not approach it. As far as my picks for “work-friendly” lip glosses for business, here they are:
