It’s been years since I’ve looked for a position, but I was under the impression head hunters or recruiters worked both sides (candidate and client). Using a head hunter was the best way to be represented and introduced to clients in order to get a position. I’m finding everything is about applying online even with recruiters positions where many strong applicants get easily lost in the shuffle. So my question is — how does a person actually get a job today if we are merely judged by what you see on paper versus an actual face to face dynamic? I’m curious – because my resume is strong, but like many people I am falling through the cracks and not getting recognized. If my resume isn’t written one way or another or… if a detail is missing – a resume is simply brushed aside – even before meeting a person. Perhaps you can make some strong suggestions because its crucial I find a position with a stable company.

Yes, computers have certainly added an extra filter for executive recruiters, (as we prefer to be called -“Head Hunter” is a colloquial term) as well as in-house corporate recruiters. Here are a couple of clarifications. Retained search firms use a different method of recruiting from contingency firms, as they do not skill market (or sell-in candidates) to obtain job openings. This is the model I currently recruit under. Thus, I interview candidates that fit very specific searches that are presently open. We do try (as a courtesy) to offer direction to candidates by suggesting other resources. Contingency search firms’ method of recruiting (a model I’ve worked under in the past) involves interviewing candidates on an exploratory basis in addition to candidates with a targeted purpose. The incentive for meeting exploratory candidates is that in addition to placing on open jobs, they can also leverage candidates to engage new clients and open orders. Additionally, contingency recruiting firms usually place freelancers and consultants, so they are open to interviewing higher numbers of candidates (on exploratory interviews) because they have higher probabilities of placing people (even as freelancers).
As per resume advice, outplacement firms or resume consultants are able to direct job seekers regarding format, content, buzz words, that elevate your resume to the top of the list. Seek out and invest in career counselors who coach candidates on essentials such as communication, attire, and the professional protocol necessary for landing a job. Coaching is not the role of an executive or corporate recruiter, even if they have the knowledge to do so. It is your responsibility to approach recruiters as a finished (or next to finished) product with a compelling resume, cover letter, and some solid coaching on how to approach these potential employers. Recruiters will often offer a light prep before an interview, but keep in mind, recruiters work for the client, because the client pays the fees. Their priority is to service the client, not to cater to your individual need. Corporate recruiters’ job is to weed candidates out, not to teach you how you could be viable for an opportunity. They are not equipped to handle to the high volume of online inquiries on their career sites, and often go to executive recruiters as added screening/recruitment resources.
My biggest advice to you is to do your homework on the types of firms and individuals you are submitting your resume so that you are not disappointed by the outcome (or lack of response). LinkedIn is a great resource for researching what firms and individual recruiters actually specialize in. This will immediately identify you as an educated candidate in the eyes of decision-makers. At the end of the day, it is a highly competitive job market where factors like seniority, corporate culture, function (digital marketing vs. brand marketing or talent acquisition vs. HR Generalist), and sector (industry)are taken into deep consideration. Remember, recruiters really want you to be the “right” candidate. It makes our job so much easier.
